Tanabata Log

YUMEMIGAOKA

As it is every year, Yumemigaoka's annual Tanabata festival is held at the street just outside of the Hikawa Shrine. The street and the shrine itself have been closed off during the day beforehand and despite the absolute rancid weather, the community has come together to get the festival space set up and ready for everyone to enjoy. And somehow, as they usually do, things just seem to come together somehow.

Come seven in the evening, the street opens to pedestrians and the festival finally kicks off. A steady, misty drizzle of rain persists through the entire evening but somehow, it just adds to the dreamy atmosphere. Hanging lanterns twinkle with raindrops and cast a warm glow over the street, paper stars are fluttering gently down from strings strung between lampposts and stalls line the full length of the street with food offerings, festival games and just about everything in between. In the wake of all the chaos over the last few months, isn't it nice that some things are still simple, quiet and unchanged?

For folks looking for games, they can enjoy:

⧖ The most popular stalls, the shooting games! Using a gun loaded with paper bullets (so, you know, mostly harmless) the aim of the game is to get a clean hit on one of the prizes along the back of the booth and knock it down! The prizes are mostly candy, snacks or kids' toys but they're deceptively hard to get a good shot at...
⧖ Goldfish scooping, a summertime classic! Using a scooper with a thin sheet of paper for the net, try your best to catch as many goldfish swimming around the water below. Do well enough and you'll win a prize and you might even be able to take your goldfish home - make sure to take good care of it!
⧖ Senbonbiki is basically pure luck - bundles of prizes, usually candies and small toys, are strung up along the top of the stall and you just have to give the corresponding other end of the string a tug. Whichever bundle of snacks comes down is yours! Of course, if you're particularly unlucky then you might get a dud or penalty prize... but surely nobody's luck is THAT bad, right?
⧖ Ring toss! Throw rings onto targets marked "1" through "10", each worth different amounts depending on where they land. Beat the high score and you'll win a prize! Though do you really want to walk around the whole festival with a giant plushie under your arm all night...?

There's also a ton of options for Japanese street food; some traditional, others more modern takes. There's fried stuff, grilled skewers, rice balls, all manner of delicious noodle dishes and mountains of sweets too; taiyaki, chocolate covered bananas, shaved ice, cotton candy, and just about everything and anything else you'd want to spend an evening stuffing your belly with. And naturally there are plenty of drinks available including freshly squeezed fruit juice and tea and some booze for those who feel like playing with fire.

Aside from the rest of the festivities, the main event is really the hanging of wishes - it is Tanabata, after all. A few tables at the top of bottom of the street have been set up to carefully shelter them from the rain and have a whole rainbow of tanzaku for people to write and hang their wishes on the bamboo trees both in the street and in the shrine down below. You can hang as many wishes as you like, if you're feeling particularly greedy, but...

The festival doesn't really reach its peak until darkness falls and, undeterred by the continued drizzle, the Hikawa Shrine lights up the sky with its famous annual fireworks show - it's always pretty spectacular but perhaps out of spite for the nasty weather, it looks even more fantastic than usual this year.

With the fireworks done, the festival begins wrapping up and it's time to head home. But just as with last year, the night's festivities seem to have only just begun and as you drift off to sleep that night, you feel a gentle unmooring as you're carried off to somewhere new...

THE DREAM SPHERE

Most people in Yumemigaoka seem to have known what was coming tonight and sure enough, it's happened again - a week's worth of dreams of a strangely vivid image, an enormous bamboo tree with a wide canopy of leaves under a dazzling night sky, just like last year. And, just like last year, when you fall asleep on Tanabata evening, you find yourself arriving Somewhere Else.

The dream unfolds as an expansive open field, drenched in the silvery light of a magnificently star-spangled sky above and cut through with a river of flowing water that reflects the sky so clearly, it looks to be filled with stars of its own. Just like the real festival, there's a fine rain drizzling down from the sky, filling the air with mist and the sweet fragrance of the hundreds of tiny, bell-shaped flowers swaying lazily in the grass. And at the center of the field, just as it was last time, is the bamboo tree from your dreams. In the year since last Tanabata, it seems to have somehow gotten even taller and even though it's so huge, though, it doesn't seem like a threatening presence at all. Its branches are spread out even wider than before, hanging low enough for you to reach out and touch and this time, they're not just weighed down by tanzaku strips but glass wind chimes, too, that tinkle and sing whenever the breeze rustles the trees.

It seems tht once again, the magic of those two starcrossed lovers has allowed everyone in Yumemigaoka to cross the Dream Sphere tonight, Dreamer or not! The effect will only last until morning, at which point the dream will unravel, so you might as well enjoy it while you're here. Many of the mundane dreamers will find they're able to move differently in the Dream Sphere, running faster and jumping impossibly high and long distances with nary a scratch to show for it; no magic of their own yet, but at least enough to have a little fun while they're here.

There's a little bit of natural magic at play here in the environment, too. If you approach the tree with a wish in mind, there's no need to write it down; it'll appear in pretty, sparkly ink on an appropriately colored tanzaku strip, already tied to the tree. Or if you go to peer at your reflection in the river, you might see it take on a shape that reflects the wish you're carrying in your heart.

    ... Except...

What sort of things are you really wishing for? The things you won't admit out loud to anyone, or even to yourself? The deepest wishes right in the darkest part of your heart that you want more than anything? Unfortunately for you, this tree seems to be of a mind to grant wishes and once it's gathered enough of everybody's tanzaku, there's a bright flash of light...

And suddenly everyone's secret wishes have been made manifest... though only in the Dream Sphere, of course. These can be anything from silly wishes to something more serious - the important part is that these secret dreams and wishes have been pulled out of your head and put on display for everyone here to see! How on earth are you going to deal with this gracefully?!

Regardless of what you choose to do, the apparitions only last for an hour or so before fading away and the sky lights up with a beautiful meteor shower that seems to go on forever. You're free to stay and watch the meteor shower and enjoy your last moments in the Dream Sphere for as long as you like but eventually, as you're watching the stars streak down from the sky, the dream around you begins to gradually fade away until you find yourself stirring in your own bed. Though it was an exceptionally busy dream, you find you're well rested and... okay, maybe a little embarrassed after all that.

Nobody will be able to return to that strange field or find the dream to stabilize it but... maybe that's fine. Aren't some things all the more special for only happening once a year?

[ Illya watches the older girl with big, worried eyes.

You're clearly not okay, she wants to say, but it feels too bold in this moment. If Hibiki is trying this hard to say the opposite, then she's got to have a good reason for it, even if Illya isn't sure what it is. Still.. It's so hard to just watch the other look like this. What could even have happened to reduce Hibiki of all people to a state like this? ]

Did something happen..?

[ It feels like the safer question. It at least doesn't imply something is wrong, only that something happened! T-That doesn't even have to be a negative thing, right?

Even though Illya feels like something negative sure happened. Especially with Hibiki not accepting any help, Illya's held out hand uselessly dropping after it's not been taken to instead hang by her side. ]

[Even she has limits to how small she would want to be. If you get to the point you can get stepped on, its less cute and more dangerous! No, her current height was optimal the way it was.]

Of course!

[It'd be easy to go on about how she doesn't really get a chance to feel that way in the real world, but she doesn't even know Mind. And it would probably be awkward for both of them. So, no gushing on about her life story.]

But I am more happy to just be here. I'm here, in this adorable outfit, able to see all these amazing sights and talk to people I'd never meet in the real world. And even if I did, I wouldn't have the courage to talk to them. But as LLENN its different.

[She turns toward Mind. She's been talking a lot about herself, she should learn more about her new friend. Yes, Kozakura, you accidentally made this girl your friend.]

So, you call yourself Mind? You must be pretty smart, huh? What do you...o..oh, actually its considered 'wrong' to ask about the real world, huh? Forget I asked that.

[For a moment, Nagihiko is....very taken aback by the sudden declaration. He barely even notices people looking at them at first.

Then...he can't help but start laughing.]

Hahaha! With that level of enthusiasm cheering me on, how could I not?!

[Jeez, he's not normally so amused by stuff like this!

...he's not normally so aggressively unsure of everything, either, and now it all feels a little silly. All remaining uncertainty aside (which he still doubts will fade for a long while), he thinks his general weird mood might've tainted his wish a little. Either way...

The other boy's right. He needs to try for a brighter outlook.

With another chuckle, he sighs.]
Haahhh...you're right, though. [He smiles again, now considerably more genuine.] Thanks. I think I needed to hear that, honestly.

[ Alas, Illya... if there's one thing Hibiki is confident of, it's her ability to avoid roundabout questions like that. ]

...Nope! Nothing you need to worry about, at least!

[ Hibiki can see the worry in Illya's eyes, and... well, that just can't stand, can it? Hibiki-onee-san needs to be strong, reliable, unshaking. She's the one who kids like Illya go to when they have problems, not the other way around. ]

I mean, come on! Can you imagine anything that I can't handle? Trust me, I'm fine...

[ Everything's alright, everything's fine... ]

...y'know, there's other games around here that're fun to just play, even if you end up losing. I'd recommend those over something like this.

[Nagihiko can't really help the commentary (though he makes sure to be quiet enough so only Aqua can hear him, he doesn't want to directly offend the person running the game. within earshot.), not when the guy both seems a bit peeved at losing and generally uninterested in the game itself, at least from his point of view. He never really got why people tried Senbonbiki anyway; what was fun about stuff that relied on just pure luck, when stuff like the ring toss was actually fun to play?]

Unless there was something specific you wanted from this one?

[Headpats get!! He happily accepts them, taking full advantage of the fact that his brother wasn't monopolizing all of the attention for once. Not that Amane doesn't also get Ai all to himself while in the Dream Sphere, but... it was different in the Waking World, okay!! Still, at the mention of his twin, he can't help but mumble a bit petulantly:]

I dunno why he wanted me to come along with him if that's all he wanted to do, though...

[It'd be one thing if Tsukasa wanted Amane to chat and keep him company as he scratched out all of the little wafers, but if he wasn't even going to acknowledge the fact that he was there...

... well. He couldn't exactly be surprised by this outcome, but he figured his sibling would have gotten better at dividing his attention over the years, too. Maybe that was too much to hope for, though.

Any grumpiness at his brother's fixation is driven away by Ai's suggestion, however, and he beams brightly in response.]

Yeah! I mean, knowing him, he'll probably be here for the next couple hours, so I'm sure he won't mind.

[He extracts himself from the hug at last, moving to collect his bag and other belongings from the table so he could be ready to join her in wandering about. He's smart enough not to directly acknowledge the "we" in that earlier statement of hers-- especially not here in public-- but he can't help but ask, regardless:]

You guys all came together though, huh? It wasn't too much trouble for you, was it?

[ He frowns forlornly at the goldfish. ]

That's true. It would probably be more humane to have a place to safely release them or something. Or trade them back in for a carnelian goldfish prize and put the fish back to be scooped again.

If I gave that to you, how many people would you be asking up there behind each other's backs? Preventing a fight in the rain and mud making the news over the festival people worked hard on is part of my job too, you know. Or at least a public service.

[Woah, what were the odds he'd run into somebody with fire abilities this quickly?? And he almost was on board with it too...]

Awwww...

[Hanako's shoulders slump as Luck reconsiders, a childish pout crossing his features. Maybe convincing one of the teachers at his school to commit arson wasn't the smartest idea, but--]

I mean, these things usually get burned up after Tanabata anyway, right? So there's nothing wrong with doing it a little early. You'd be saving us all the trouble if you do!

[Though whether he means the trouble of burning up the wishes or having to deal with everything else involving this tree is anyone's guess.]

[T-The lung power on this one.... it's almost kind of intimidating, but there's no way Hanako's going to let on about that!! (Not that she could really see it regardless, but--)]

Awwww, but that's no fun! Don't you wanna imagine yourself as someone who can see without 'em? Our powers are all about the mind, after all!

[A beat, and then:]

... or something like that, anyway!

[Just because he was an Experienced Dreamer didn't mean he was an expert about it!! Granted, the fact that he had this much energy and stamina on the other side was somewhat proof of this theory, but if it was really all about how one envisioned themselves, then he'd definitely be taller, right...?? He grins back at him, skewer stick poking out of his mouth]

Hey, no problem! [the gratuitous Engrish strikes again-] It's easy to get caught up in your own head if you aren't paying attention. Sometimes you just need to give yourself a good shake to get those cobwebs out of the way. Or get someone to do it for you.

Besides, good luck won't help you any if you don't capitalize on it either.

[Hanako stills to a stop the moment Ango mentions the twins, the look flickering across his face just then hovering between surprised and apprehensive. He didn't mean who he thinks he means... did he? The old fart, for all his screw-ups and failures, was a lot more perceptive than people believed him to be-- which is why he had to proceed with the utmost caution from here. Bad enough Ango made that MILF joke about her before, but now this--]

"Twins"...? Which twins do you mean?

[He schools his expression into one of dubious curiosity, the expression of somebody who was more concerned about these totally mysterious and definitely dangerous siblings that he absolutely did not know, whatsoever.]

Should I be worried that someone's moving in on my schtick? I'm pretty sure Tsukasa and I had dibs on the "clingy twin" thing first.
thezekeinator: (objection!)

[personal profile] thezekeinator 2024-07-26 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[Zeke ALWAYS gives sensible advice. It's not his fault that people take 'care for your mental health' and 'enjoy life' as weird and stupid. That's on them, all of them.]

Okay, chum, look -- first things first, if someone has a type, it's just a preference, not an absolute. People can and do end up with partners who aren't their preference. It's different if it's a hard line, but you said 'into' and not 'will only settle for'. Plus fantasies are sometimes better off just as fantasies, too.

But set that aside. [Chaosbringer reaches up to prod the kid atop of him, firmly though not painfully.] You asked her out, she said yes, you had fun together, she says she likes you. My guy, if you keep going like this, in twenty years you're going to sit up straight and have a heart attack over how you could've been so dumb to miss blatant and obvious signals. If anyone else described their relationship with a girl like that, what the jolly hell would you think?
hanamane: (✿ 013)

[personal profile] hanamane 2024-07-27 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
[... Sonic, half the game is going to wring your neck for that read alone, c'mon. Why else would Zeke be so intent on getting them all to therapy?? Hanako, on his end, just opts to pull a face at that response, crossing his arms behind his head as he lounges back a little in mid-air.]

Boooo... you say all of that, and you're still the same guy you are back in the real world? Lame. You said you can be whoever you wanna be, right?

[Not that Hanako can recognize somebody who's absolutely and wholly confident in themselves and who they are. Couldn't be him!!

His eyes travel back out to the gathering, Dreamers and regular folk alike milling about the field, his expression tempering to something a bit more pensive. If only it were as easy as leaving all of your troubles behind in the real world...]

... anyway, it's not as simple as all of that. Sure, we get to be the people we wanna be here, but that doesn't mean all our problems are gone when we're awake. Most Dreamers Awaken 'cos of Nightmares, don't they? And happy, content people don't exactly generate those things on their own. Sure, being a Dreamer means we can protect the rest of the people here from them, but... it's not like we immediately eliminated those problems from reality just because we can fight a bunch of monsters or anything.

Fair point. It can be quite fun, seeing all the ways we can differ from one another.

[And that continued here, as Maihime watched with amazement as Rhodonite showed her own skills, observing first the guitar, then the dome it makes very closely.]

Oh my...yes, I can see what you mean. That's quite impressive! [Her eyes sparkle as she looks at the guitar again.] For it to take this form, and to do it with such ease...do you play music in the waking world as well, then?

[His eyes glance back over towards Shinsha as they sputter, raising an eyebrow of his dubiously at their response. Was it really that hard for them to believe? It's not like they were ugly or anything-- heck, they could probably be a decent model if they had more confidence. But then, Shinsha never really seemed interested in that sort of stuff-- or so he assumed, anyway, by the disgusted looks they usually gave him at his dirty jokes. But then, that's just probably a normal reaction]

Oh, I'm sure even you'd be able to notice it if she did. You can practically see the little cartoon hearts come off her sometimes.

[And if not that, then the glazed eyes and the goofy smile, at least! That was sort of hard to miss, wasn't it? Before he could say anything else on the matter, though, Shinsha's last little retort hits him with all the force of a hurled brick, and he gapes up at them for a good moment or two from his prone position on the ground. Did he just hear them right??]

... huh? [How could such a simple sound hold so much indignant disbelief--] Excuse me, my personality is fantastic, thank you very much. The little old ladies at the shop think I'm darling.

She's happy to have Maihime seem so interested, but the question about playing on the other side hits a nerve, and Rhodonite... doesn't quite scowl, but she seems a little deflated, her low note fading into the night.]

I... used to. It's a long story. I want to pick it back up again, though. Hopefully sooner rather than later. [She glances down at her bass, sighing softly.] And I think that's why my weapon and powers are like this. It's part of why I'm interested in everyone else's powers too - it can't be just me, right?

[She stops well short of asking if that includes Maihime. That's... not polite conversation, but since the other girl asked, she doesn't mind volunteering the information herself.]

Anyway... for all my complaining about this part in particular, I do like Tanabata, and I want to hang a wish on the tree before the night's over. It's tradition, you know?
