Tanabata Log

YUMEMIGAOKA

As it is every year, Yumemigaoka's annual Tanabata festival is held at the street just outside of the Hikawa Shrine. The street and the shrine itself have been closed off during the day beforehand and despite the absolute rancid weather, the community has come together to get the festival space set up and ready for everyone to enjoy. And somehow, as they usually do, things just seem to come together somehow.

Come seven in the evening, the street opens to pedestrians and the festival finally kicks off. A steady, misty drizzle of rain persists through the entire evening but somehow, it just adds to the dreamy atmosphere. Hanging lanterns twinkle with raindrops and cast a warm glow over the street, paper stars are fluttering gently down from strings strung between lampposts and stalls line the full length of the street with food offerings, festival games and just about everything in between. In the wake of all the chaos over the last few months, isn't it nice that some things are still simple, quiet and unchanged?

For folks looking for games, they can enjoy:

⧖ The most popular stalls, the shooting games! Using a gun loaded with paper bullets (so, you know, mostly harmless) the aim of the game is to get a clean hit on one of the prizes along the back of the booth and knock it down! The prizes are mostly candy, snacks or kids' toys but they're deceptively hard to get a good shot at...
⧖ Goldfish scooping, a summertime classic! Using a scooper with a thin sheet of paper for the net, try your best to catch as many goldfish swimming around the water below. Do well enough and you'll win a prize and you might even be able to take your goldfish home - make sure to take good care of it!
⧖ Senbonbiki is basically pure luck - bundles of prizes, usually candies and small toys, are strung up along the top of the stall and you just have to give the corresponding other end of the string a tug. Whichever bundle of snacks comes down is yours! Of course, if you're particularly unlucky then you might get a dud or penalty prize... but surely nobody's luck is THAT bad, right?
⧖ Ring toss! Throw rings onto targets marked "1" through "10", each worth different amounts depending on where they land. Beat the high score and you'll win a prize! Though do you really want to walk around the whole festival with a giant plushie under your arm all night...?

There's also a ton of options for Japanese street food; some traditional, others more modern takes. There's fried stuff, grilled skewers, rice balls, all manner of delicious noodle dishes and mountains of sweets too; taiyaki, chocolate covered bananas, shaved ice, cotton candy, and just about everything and anything else you'd want to spend an evening stuffing your belly with. And naturally there are plenty of drinks available including freshly squeezed fruit juice and tea and some booze for those who feel like playing with fire.

Aside from the rest of the festivities, the main event is really the hanging of wishes - it is Tanabata, after all. A few tables at the top of bottom of the street have been set up to carefully shelter them from the rain and have a whole rainbow of tanzaku for people to write and hang their wishes on the bamboo trees both in the street and in the shrine down below. You can hang as many wishes as you like, if you're feeling particularly greedy, but...

The festival doesn't really reach its peak until darkness falls and, undeterred by the continued drizzle, the Hikawa Shrine lights up the sky with its famous annual fireworks show - it's always pretty spectacular but perhaps out of spite for the nasty weather, it looks even more fantastic than usual this year.

With the fireworks done, the festival begins wrapping up and it's time to head home. But just as with last year, the night's festivities seem to have only just begun and as you drift off to sleep that night, you feel a gentle unmooring as you're carried off to somewhere new...

THE DREAM SPHERE

Most people in Yumemigaoka seem to have known what was coming tonight and sure enough, it's happened again - a week's worth of dreams of a strangely vivid image, an enormous bamboo tree with a wide canopy of leaves under a dazzling night sky, just like last year. And, just like last year, when you fall asleep on Tanabata evening, you find yourself arriving Somewhere Else.

The dream unfolds as an expansive open field, drenched in the silvery light of a magnificently star-spangled sky above and cut through with a river of flowing water that reflects the sky so clearly, it looks to be filled with stars of its own. Just like the real festival, there's a fine rain drizzling down from the sky, filling the air with mist and the sweet fragrance of the hundreds of tiny, bell-shaped flowers swaying lazily in the grass. And at the center of the field, just as it was last time, is the bamboo tree from your dreams. In the year since last Tanabata, it seems to have somehow gotten even taller and even though it's so huge, though, it doesn't seem like a threatening presence at all. Its branches are spread out even wider than before, hanging low enough for you to reach out and touch and this time, they're not just weighed down by tanzaku strips but glass wind chimes, too, that tinkle and sing whenever the breeze rustles the trees.

It seems tht once again, the magic of those two starcrossed lovers has allowed everyone in Yumemigaoka to cross the Dream Sphere tonight, Dreamer or not! The effect will only last until morning, at which point the dream will unravel, so you might as well enjoy it while you're here. Many of the mundane dreamers will find they're able to move differently in the Dream Sphere, running faster and jumping impossibly high and long distances with nary a scratch to show for it; no magic of their own yet, but at least enough to have a little fun while they're here.

There's a little bit of natural magic at play here in the environment, too. If you approach the tree with a wish in mind, there's no need to write it down; it'll appear in pretty, sparkly ink on an appropriately colored tanzaku strip, already tied to the tree. Or if you go to peer at your reflection in the river, you might see it take on a shape that reflects the wish you're carrying in your heart.

    ... Except...

What sort of things are you really wishing for? The things you won't admit out loud to anyone, or even to yourself? The deepest wishes right in the darkest part of your heart that you want more than anything? Unfortunately for you, this tree seems to be of a mind to grant wishes and once it's gathered enough of everybody's tanzaku, there's a bright flash of light...

And suddenly everyone's secret wishes have been made manifest... though only in the Dream Sphere, of course. These can be anything from silly wishes to something more serious - the important part is that these secret dreams and wishes have been pulled out of your head and put on display for everyone here to see! How on earth are you going to deal with this gracefully?!

Regardless of what you choose to do, the apparitions only last for an hour or so before fading away and the sky lights up with a beautiful meteor shower that seems to go on forever. You're free to stay and watch the meteor shower and enjoy your last moments in the Dream Sphere for as long as you like but eventually, as you're watching the stars streak down from the sky, the dream around you begins to gradually fade away until you find yourself stirring in your own bed. Though it was an exceptionally busy dream, you find you're well rested and... okay, maybe a little embarrassed after all that.

Nobody will be able to return to that strange field or find the dream to stabilize it but... maybe that's fine. Aren't some things all the more special for only happening once a year?

Yup! [he grins, hands on his hips, looking at ease and confident] And I can't think of anyone I want to be more than me.

[for anyone else, it's clearly putting on airs, but from Sonic? He's one of maybe two people in the entire city that's perfectly happy with themselves (Chaosbringer being the OG, of course). Basically, Hanako's attempt at a reversal has bounced harmlessly off of his target]

Sure, but even happy and content people have their worries. Just because you have one Nightmare doesn't mean you stop dreaming. [he looks at the crowd, and his confident smirk turns to something a little gentler] And you're a Dreamer, aren't you? I heard that people who awaken via a nightmare attack do so because they overcame it. They didn't back down. So why let your insecurities stop from doing it again?

[he crosses his arms and looks at Hanako]

Life's not perfect. Stuff's going to inevitably go wrong, but you just gotta pick yourself up again and keep going. Knowing things can go wrong is why things going right feels so much better!
reluctants: (maybe it's because it's intertwining)

[personal profile] reluctants 2024-07-29 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
.. well, it's true that you're very strong..

[ Illya would hate to deny that out loud. It just feels like an objective sort of truth, after all. The sky is blue, Hibiki is strong. And besides - even if it wasn't true, could she really insult Hibiki when Illya looks up so much to the other girl? And when she'd feel super mean for doing so?

There's no way she could. So she does just say that to Hibiki, even if it doesn't really stop the worry. It may be nothing she has to worry about, but Illya is going to worry anyway. Because she cares. ]

You just seem a little bit off. [ She says - trying to point it out as gently as possible.

Which is very gently, considering Illya is trying so darn hard to be careful about this here. Even if Hibiki is strong, it's almost as if something about the older girl seems weirdly delicate in this moment. ]

[Well, shoot, he really thought that was gonna do the trick. Better work on his puppy-dog eyes a bit harder for next time, then!!

The moment Sylvain mentions the mind-reading, however, the dejected wet cat look drops like a rock from his face, settling onto something a bit more unreadable. Ah-- so he already knew what it was capable of, huh? And yet he still didn't want to do anything about it... how troublesome.]

So you think it's better to have it go and air out our dirty laundry for everyone to see than nip the problem in the bud? Okay then.

Personally, I think people would be more upset over getting their hearts pried into instead of a burning tree, but that's just me.

[personal profile] ruinedsky 2024-07-29 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)

[ Valiant effort kid. ] Yeah, see, that's the thing. Not everyone is gonna think Burning Tree is better than the alternative. Especially since a bunch of non-Dreamers are here right now, they might panic and not understand that they're technically safe.

[Was it a little mean to be keeping something so important from one of his trainees? Probably. But it's not like he was going to hold them hostage forever-- once that little mirage clears up, he'd be happy to pass them back her way, no problem. But in the meantime...]

Nooo~pe, you gotta catch me first--!

Ahahaha!

[A cackle rings out in the air, then, the laughter sounding nearly identical to Hanako's, but... no, it overlapped a little too closely with what he said just then, didn't it? Not to mention the voice was just a touch higher, a bit scratchier...

He stops abruptly in his tracks-- probably giving Junna a perfect opportunity to catch up and wrest her glasses back, no doubt-- his face paling as the sound registers with him. It was a laugh he knew well... probably his whole life, even. Junna would probably know it too... though with less positive associations, of course.]

Amane, Amane, c'mon!! I wanna see if we run into a dragon again!

[... why couldn't the tree just stick to embarrassing fantasies instead of reverting back into traumaville for him??? Explaining a crush on a fellow Dreamer was infinitely more appealing in this moment than addressing whatever fresh sibling angst this was about to awaken in him again.]

You know, I have no idea how I didn't see that coming.

determinationtofist: (She's so glad)

[personal profile] determinationtofist 2024-07-30 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ See! Exactly! Hibiki is strong, and nobody can deny it! That's what makes it the best way to shut down anything that even slightly insinuates otherwise! She's so smart. ]

Illya-chan... [ Hibiki smiles. ] You're a good girl, Illya-chan... but you don't have to worry about me. I can handle it myself.

[ Illya is smart, and she's right too. She's not off in the slightest... and to her credit, it's her delicacy that keeps from pushing Hibiki too far. Hibiki would hate to snap at her... to do anything that might hurt her, emotionally or otherwise.

But alas, being gentle isn't enough. So she repeats the same thing she's said over and over again this entire time... ]

...I'm fine.

hanategami: (that is NOT a real smile boy-)

[personal profile] hanategami 2024-07-31 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Precisely.

[He's...not sure how he sorta forgot that point, honestly. Heck, he's pretty sure he'd given similar advice to one of his old friends in the past. Had he really been that out of sorts lately?

...to be fair, between the Dreamer Awakening and the personal issues, he's had a lot on his mind as of late. But...maybe now could be a good chance to try and shake all of that off for a while and simply enjoy being in the moment, like he used to do whenever he was Nagihiko in the past.]

I owe you one. [It feels way easier to smile now, now that his mood is lifting.] It'll definitely be easier to enjoy the rest of the festival without that looming over my head.

[ Ai doesn't protest as she's pulled along - in fact, for an unsettlingly long moment she doesn't say anything at all. It's worrisome - Dreamer Ai-Doll always knows just what to say, after all. It's why she's everyone's favourite. It's why she's everyone's role model. No matter how wrong things go, Dreamer Ai-Doll always gets it right. Right now, though, she's finding it pretty hard to come up with any nice, polished words for all this.

It's not like she's never seen herself all dolled up like a bride before, of course - she's graced the covers of more June magazines than not - but getting dressed up to sell that idea to other people and being the subject of it herself are too very different things.

Even if she was allowed to explain the pit forming in her stomach, though - how would she even start?

A noise finally dislodges itself from her chest - a laugh. It's awkward and lopsided, just like the smile that limps onto her face. ]

Ahaha! Oh, wow! Looks like I'm more popular than I thought in a whole lot of ways.

[ Her voice is effortlessly cheery like always, but with a smile like that... ]

Too bad for whoever dreamed it up, though, huh? I'm really not bride material.

[He pouts a bit at that prodding, but lets go of his grip on Chaosbringer regardless-- it was pointless trying to get him to not look at the mirage now, not when everything was already out in the open like this. Granted, he was still going to stay perched atop him for the time being; it was one thing saying this stuff aloud, but he didn't want Zeke to look at him while he was being this vulnerable, for goodness sakes.

There was a part of him that wanted to take the other man's words to heart-- with the way he put it, it was really cut and dry, wasn't it? Boy likes girl, girl (dubiously) likes boy, they go out, they enjoy each other's company... if he was an optimist by any nature, he'd be content to accept it as it was. But... was it really as simple as all of that? Things were fine now, but...]

I dunno... types and preferences aside, she'd probably be happier with someone who's a bit more available for her, y'know? Someone who doesn't need to play guessing games about their health or anything like that.

[... ah. So that's what this was all about. Of course, since his procedure, he'd been feeling better than he had been in a good while, but... how long was that going to last, exactly? He thought he had been doing fine before, but the whole experience at the beginning of the year reminded him of how fragile his health could be. What if it happened again? What if it wasn't something a simple operation could fix?

He peers down at Zeke, the mask fixed back into place as a bright, almost jarringly nonchalant smile crosses his face, as he adds:]

After all, she got real mad at me when I disappeared the last time, so she probably doesn't wanna deal with that sorta thing often! I mean, you wouldn't, would you?

[... Amane, she was mad that you ghosted her and then got yourself trapped in the Dream Sphere, you absolute DINGUS.]

[Junna catches up and she's quick to snatch her glasses back. It's not until she has those on her face again that she realizes. There's two voiced of laughter.

And his expression isn't really one of laughter anymore. She knows that second voice, too. She freezes for a moment, herself. When she looks back at Hanako...

Her expression is a lot more sympathetic.]

...That's Tsukasa?

[She hesitates, before she adds:] This place hardly plays fair.

[Zeke isn't wrenching the kid off of him for just that reason. He totally gets that a total lack of eye contact is the only reason they're getting this far in the conversation. But his body language hasn't relaxed, as he drums his fingers on his sleeve.]

Chum. That's for her to decide, not you to decide for her. You really like this girl, then you respect her enough to give her a choice, and you respect her choice when she makes it. And that doesn't just mean that if she says no, you accept it, though that's part of it. It also means that if she says yes, you jolly take the yes, and don't second-guess it or test it or demand to know if she's super super sure, or whatever like that.

Nah, I'm just here, hanging out, doing my thing~ [he grins around his skewer] Nothing says welcome like some good old fashioned pep talk! [he's not even a local to Yumemigaoka. What is he even talking about--

And eschewing all Japanese etiquette, Nikki extends a hand out for a shake]

Name's Nikki. Nice to meetcha!

[He stumbles a little at the slap on the back, but the grin doesn't leave his face.

Honestly, this guy is reminding him more and more of Kukai. That's a good thing; Kukai was a good friend, so meeting someone like him was a very good thing in Nagihiko's eyes.

He's quick to return the handshake.]

Maihime knows a sore spot being hit when she sees it. A long story, indeed.]

Well... [She tries to put on as reassuring of a smile as she can.] If you ever do, I'd love to hear you play. [At the other's observation, she nods.] That...makes sense.

[but then what did that mean for her, who only ever had one identity here when she had two outside? there had to be something here for nagihiko, right? if not...

Pause. No. Bad train of thought. Go back.

She's thankful for the change in topic, and relaxes a little.]
Of course! [She turns towards the tree, then looks back at Rhodonite.] Shall we, then?
reluctants: (with the sky you looked toward)

[ No, you can't, a part of her wants to say.

It's such a tiny part of her that loses out to the part of her that wants to respect Hibiki. But it still exists. It's the part of her that thinks of all the horrible things that have already happened just because people wanted to handle stuff by themselves. And it's not like that sort of thing is going to happen to Hibiki, but what--

What if it does?

Without realizing it, Illya reaches back out towards the other girl. Her hand grabs onto Hibiki's sleeve, clinging onto it like she's afraid the other girl will disappear or get hurt the moment she lets go. ]

Can we.. do something together then?

[ If Hibiki doesn't want to leave this place, despite looking like she really wanted to only a moment ago, then-- maybe the best thing she can do for now is make sure she's not alone. ]

I really want to eat ice cream.. [ Look at her at least being smart about this. Framing it like it's some selfish desire - maybe it'll ironically enough make it more difficult for Hibiki to say no than if Illya would tell the truth and show it's actually for the other girl's sake. ] Can we get some together..?
determinationtofist: (Proud)

[personal profile] determinationtofist 2024-08-01 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Illya-chan...

[ Hibiki isn't the smartest, she knows this, but she can see the look in Illya's eyes as she clings to her sleeve... and in that moment, Hibiki's expression finally softens. Still pained, but... ]

Mm... I'd love that, Illya-chan!

[ And finally, even if it's not in a way that truly changes anything, Hibiki takes Illya's hand in her own and smiles. ]

Let's get some ice cream together, then.

[ But even if it's small... and even inconsequential... in this moment, it helps. ]

But on the upside, since I want you to be happy, you get covered by it too.

If it wasn't personal it wouldn't hit like that. And whatever standards you're using to say it's nothing, it's not nothing to you. Come on, out with it.

[Chaosbringer doesn't know the meaning of the word 'surrender'! In fact, there are multiple words he doesn't know the meaning of! Only one is relevant at this time.]

[ She's babbling. It's not like Hibiki at all - she talks a lot but never like this, stumbling and tripping all over her words, pouring them out like she's scared of what will happen if she doesn't fill the silence. Like that, she almost sounds like...

Well. She sounds like Ai. And she's been doing this long enough to say with confidence that it's never a good thing when her trainees start taking after her. And while Hibiki might not be one of hers on paper, she sure is in spirit.

Ai's fingers tighten on her shoulders. ]

Hibiki-chan, did someone scare you? You don't have to say who or what happened. But we can go and find security if you're not feeling safe.
