Tanabata Log

YUMEMIGAOKA

As it is every year, Yumemigaoka's annual Tanabata festival is held at the street just outside of the Hikawa Shrine. The street and the shrine itself have been closed off during the day beforehand and despite the absolute rancid weather, the community has come together to get the festival space set up and ready for everyone to enjoy. And somehow, as they usually do, things just seem to come together somehow.

Come seven in the evening, the street opens to pedestrians and the festival finally kicks off. A steady, misty drizzle of rain persists through the entire evening but somehow, it just adds to the dreamy atmosphere. Hanging lanterns twinkle with raindrops and cast a warm glow over the street, paper stars are fluttering gently down from strings strung between lampposts and stalls line the full length of the street with food offerings, festival games and just about everything in between. In the wake of all the chaos over the last few months, isn't it nice that some things are still simple, quiet and unchanged?

For folks looking for games, they can enjoy:

⧖ The most popular stalls, the shooting games! Using a gun loaded with paper bullets (so, you know, mostly harmless) the aim of the game is to get a clean hit on one of the prizes along the back of the booth and knock it down! The prizes are mostly candy, snacks or kids' toys but they're deceptively hard to get a good shot at...
⧖ Goldfish scooping, a summertime classic! Using a scooper with a thin sheet of paper for the net, try your best to catch as many goldfish swimming around the water below. Do well enough and you'll win a prize and you might even be able to take your goldfish home - make sure to take good care of it!
⧖ Senbonbiki is basically pure luck - bundles of prizes, usually candies and small toys, are strung up along the top of the stall and you just have to give the corresponding other end of the string a tug. Whichever bundle of snacks comes down is yours! Of course, if you're particularly unlucky then you might get a dud or penalty prize... but surely nobody's luck is THAT bad, right?
⧖ Ring toss! Throw rings onto targets marked "1" through "10", each worth different amounts depending on where they land. Beat the high score and you'll win a prize! Though do you really want to walk around the whole festival with a giant plushie under your arm all night...?

There's also a ton of options for Japanese street food; some traditional, others more modern takes. There's fried stuff, grilled skewers, rice balls, all manner of delicious noodle dishes and mountains of sweets too; taiyaki, chocolate covered bananas, shaved ice, cotton candy, and just about everything and anything else you'd want to spend an evening stuffing your belly with. And naturally there are plenty of drinks available including freshly squeezed fruit juice and tea and some booze for those who feel like playing with fire.

Aside from the rest of the festivities, the main event is really the hanging of wishes - it is Tanabata, after all. A few tables at the top of bottom of the street have been set up to carefully shelter them from the rain and have a whole rainbow of tanzaku for people to write and hang their wishes on the bamboo trees both in the street and in the shrine down below. You can hang as many wishes as you like, if you're feeling particularly greedy, but...

The festival doesn't really reach its peak until darkness falls and, undeterred by the continued drizzle, the Hikawa Shrine lights up the sky with its famous annual fireworks show - it's always pretty spectacular but perhaps out of spite for the nasty weather, it looks even more fantastic than usual this year.

With the fireworks done, the festival begins wrapping up and it's time to head home. But just as with last year, the night's festivities seem to have only just begun and as you drift off to sleep that night, you feel a gentle unmooring as you're carried off to somewhere new...

THE DREAM SPHERE

Most people in Yumemigaoka seem to have known what was coming tonight and sure enough, it's happened again - a week's worth of dreams of a strangely vivid image, an enormous bamboo tree with a wide canopy of leaves under a dazzling night sky, just like last year. And, just like last year, when you fall asleep on Tanabata evening, you find yourself arriving Somewhere Else.

The dream unfolds as an expansive open field, drenched in the silvery light of a magnificently star-spangled sky above and cut through with a river of flowing water that reflects the sky so clearly, it looks to be filled with stars of its own. Just like the real festival, there's a fine rain drizzling down from the sky, filling the air with mist and the sweet fragrance of the hundreds of tiny, bell-shaped flowers swaying lazily in the grass. And at the center of the field, just as it was last time, is the bamboo tree from your dreams. In the year since last Tanabata, it seems to have somehow gotten even taller and even though it's so huge, though, it doesn't seem like a threatening presence at all. Its branches are spread out even wider than before, hanging low enough for you to reach out and touch and this time, they're not just weighed down by tanzaku strips but glass wind chimes, too, that tinkle and sing whenever the breeze rustles the trees.

It seems tht once again, the magic of those two starcrossed lovers has allowed everyone in Yumemigaoka to cross the Dream Sphere tonight, Dreamer or not! The effect will only last until morning, at which point the dream will unravel, so you might as well enjoy it while you're here. Many of the mundane dreamers will find they're able to move differently in the Dream Sphere, running faster and jumping impossibly high and long distances with nary a scratch to show for it; no magic of their own yet, but at least enough to have a little fun while they're here.

There's a little bit of natural magic at play here in the environment, too. If you approach the tree with a wish in mind, there's no need to write it down; it'll appear in pretty, sparkly ink on an appropriately colored tanzaku strip, already tied to the tree. Or if you go to peer at your reflection in the river, you might see it take on a shape that reflects the wish you're carrying in your heart.

    ... Except...

What sort of things are you really wishing for? The things you won't admit out loud to anyone, or even to yourself? The deepest wishes right in the darkest part of your heart that you want more than anything? Unfortunately for you, this tree seems to be of a mind to grant wishes and once it's gathered enough of everybody's tanzaku, there's a bright flash of light...

And suddenly everyone's secret wishes have been made manifest... though only in the Dream Sphere, of course. These can be anything from silly wishes to something more serious - the important part is that these secret dreams and wishes have been pulled out of your head and put on display for everyone here to see! How on earth are you going to deal with this gracefully?!

Regardless of what you choose to do, the apparitions only last for an hour or so before fading away and the sky lights up with a beautiful meteor shower that seems to go on forever. You're free to stay and watch the meteor shower and enjoy your last moments in the Dream Sphere for as long as you like but eventually, as you're watching the stars streak down from the sky, the dream around you begins to gradually fade away until you find yourself stirring in your own bed. Though it was an exceptionally busy dream, you find you're well rested and... okay, maybe a little embarrassed after all that.

Nobody will be able to return to that strange field or find the dream to stabilize it but... maybe that's fine. Aren't some things all the more special for only happening once a year?

[1] Festival

[ Aqua isn't really the type to enjoy festivals. Not too surprising, he's not exactly known for being festive. The only time he ever shows an abundance of energy is at one of Ai's concerts. Sure, he'll play a festival game here and there, but a whole lot of them are rigged anyway right? He'd rather avoid that, thanks.

That said, he did decide to give Senbonbiki a shot. Nothing to lose, right? ]

...

Ooh, tough luck! Better luck next time, kid!

[ There he is, holding a string with absolutely nothing on the end of it, his eyebrow twitching. ]

...Hm.

[ ...He's not bothered. ]

[2] Dreamsphere

[ Well, whatever. Bad signs of luck to come aside, the festival isn't what Aqua's been waiting for. What he's been waiting for is the potential repeat of the event from last year's Tanabata... the one that he had unfortunately missed out on.

He'll admit, he hesitated at first. Just a month ago there was that whole fiasco of being stuck in the Dreamsphere, but if anything that just made this more important. He was the only member of his family to have not seen it, after all.

So it's a real good thing that the event came back for a repeat this year. ]

So this is it...

[ He's still just... himself. No awakening, if everyone's stories of what that's like are any indication. Still, he's here, looking out at the sparkling pastel expanse around him.

And of course, the infamous tree in question from last year. Where he can see other people having crowded around as well.

Curiosity inevitably wins over in his mind. He knows what his wish is... or at the very least, a few options that he figures it'll be. So with that in mind, he walks over to the tree, curious to see what his own wish will look like.

He figures it's one of two things... the first being becoming a Dreamer like his mom and sister. That much is obvious, especially after everything that's happened. The second... well, if becoming a Dreamer isn't what the tree picks up on, then it must be becoming a doctor. If he could become one in his past life, he can definitely become one here, after all. Not that he's thought about that much recently. Still, there's nothing else he can think of, so— ]

Huh...?

[ And yet, once he approaches the tree, what he sees is... neither of those things. What he sees is himself, of course, but... he's onstage. Or more accurately, he's on a filmset, acting out a role... a scene in which the villain clashes with the hero, with him as the villain. Both him and the faceless other actor are in elaborate costumes with detailed props, the hero acting with energy and passion while he matches it with something cold and chilling. The film crew can be seen behind the cameras the whole while. He can't help but remember an offhand comment from his sister about how he's better suited to those kind of roles. ]

"Annnnd cut! Good work out there, Aqua-kun."

It was nothing, director.

[ The scene ends, he drops his role, and where one would expect Aqua to look as uninterested as ever, he looks... happy. Pleased with himself. Enjoying himself. Smiling.

...It looks weird, he thinks. ]

[The kid's wild haymaker punch is easy to avoid - Aqua's athletic enough for sure, but his form's all wrong and he's probably never had any serious martial arts training. Ango's fighting skills have been honed in back alley bar fights, so he shouldn't have any trouble beating a teenager with no powers... but there's just one little problem.

He can't hit a kid! Especially a kid who's the twin brother of Ai's mentee!

Okay, he fought Hibiki-chan that one time, and Hanako's evil twin, but those were both Night Terror incidents so there's gotta be some kind of kid-punching free pass!]

Look, buddy, I know you care a lot about Ai... but...

But she's never gonna date you! You're like, 16! Eww! That's just gross!

Rats?

[Some people might have shrieked at the thought of pet rats, but Shinsha doesn't seem bothered. They look curious, if anything, although it's hard to read expressions on their perpetually deadpan face.]

...I've heard that they're very smart, and clean, too.

[An ideal pet, honestly, though Shinsha favors houseplants.]

[The praise is met with a very bright grin. Someone's clearly proud of their skills.

Which, of course, means that just stopping here is unthinkable.]

I think I'll take up the chance to aim for the top!

[Either he gets a big prize (that he's likely to gift to someone who'd better suit it later on, but at least he could say he earned it), or he just gets to challenge himself a little more. A win-win, in his eyes!]

It certainly seems that way. [She glances around at some of the ordinary people that've been let into the Dreamsphere for the night. Definitely something new for her.

At the slight warning, she chuckles. That's the tone and words of someone who witnessed exactly what she was talking about.]
I'll keep that in mind. Hopefully nothing too ridiculous happens, but...I'll simply stay out of the way if it does.

[she's totally going to try to manifest Dream Popcorn and absentmindedly watch the ango thing from a safe distance later once that occurs. like a colosseum spectator]

Ah, in that case, please refer to me as Dreamer Maihime here, then. [She smiles, then turns to the little one beside her.] And this is-

Temari. [She floats forward, bowing to Rhodonite.] You could consider me a sort of "manifestation" of Maihime's powers. It's a pleasure to meet you.

[1] Festival Fun!

[ Hibiki's been... off for a while now. Her greetings have been less enthusiastic, her glomps less frequent, her smiles more... forced. To be honest, that can still be said for her, even now. ]

Ah!! I got it, I got it!!

[ ...but it does look like she's steadily getting better. Case and point, she just managed to toss a ring onto the furthest target, scoring a whopping 10 at Ring Toss. Earning her a very large and very round chicken plushie. ]

Uwah...! It's so big...

[ Seriously, she's squeezing it to her chest from the middle and it's still going above her head in height. She looks... happy. Proud of herself, even. Then she sees you. ]

...Ah! Were you looking at this one?

[ She smiles... and it's a real one, or at least the realest one this month. Coming to the festival must have been the right idea after all, huh? ]

[2] Festival... Unfun...

[ Hibiki was having fun. She was having fun. She was having a good time. She even had Miku with her. It was a fun little date... but they got separated in the crowd. So Hibiki was looking for her. You might've even heard her calling Miku's name as she waded through the crowd.

But... when you see her, she's not with Miku. Instead, she's with an older, middle-aged man with light brown hair, just like Hibiki's. He's working at one of the food stalls, and he's staring at Hibiki with wide eyes. A look of shock that Hibiki herself is returning.

Hibiki says something, but it's drowned out by the crowd of people... and next thing you know it, she's sprinting away with her head down like she's running for her life. ]

A-Ah! Hibiki...!

[ The man calls out to her, but doesn't pursue, stuck where he's standing with a dumbfound look on his face. Hibiki, meanwhile... she's still sprinting. Where? Anywhere but here... and she's fast too. ]

[3] Dreamsphere

[ It can't have been him. There's no way, right? Why would he be here? It's way too coincidental.

Even as the night ended, as everyone started slipping into one big dream, Hibiki hadn't calmed down at all. Outwardly, sure... but on the inside? It feels like she can't breathe. Why did she run? Why is she reacting this way? It's... this should be a good thing, right...!?

At some point, as Hibiki wandered the Dreamsphere trying to get her head in order... she found herself in front of the tree without realizing it. Last time she was here, it was... nice. Embarrassing, definitely, but... it had been nice.

This time, though, when she looks up in realization at where she is... she sees something new. It's not the same dream as it was last time. The same man from the festival is there, but he's younger... more well-kept, too.

There's also herself. Small, innocent, tiny little Hibiki Tachibana. She's happy, she's smiling a bright, wide, goofy little smile befitting a girl her age... and the man is smiling just as brightly, his big hand ruffling her hair and— ]

No!!

[ And there she goes, taking off running again... even faster this time, since this is the Dreamsphere. The image fades away like smoke in the wind as Hibiki runs from the vision the tree showed her, the wish deep in her heart. ]

[Festivals are always pretty unique and a great way to get a sense of the people and the culture. They're easily some of his favourite parts of visiting different countries, and this is no different.

Of course, when you're as wild and free-spirited as Sonic is, there's almost no fear in what sort of wish the Dream Sphere latches onto. His dream has always been the same thing - freedom and the adventure and wonder that brings with it-]

Huh?

[he zipped straight past Ai originally and has to jog back (backwards, kid didn't even bother to turn around) to stand in front of her]

Oooh. That's true. Things have been kinda weird lately, huh? [wink!] Sure, let's go!

Heh, and with the infallible Ai-Doll here, any Torments that try to crash the party are in for a bad time. Gotta make sure to show off my best side~

[Sonic doesn't even bother to turn to look at Hanako when he requests a light. He just raises his hand up-up-UP and...

CHOP!]

Bad Hanako, you're a toilet ghost, not a pyro jack!!

[it's a gentle chop, the sort you'd give a misbehaving dog to discipline it. But the fact that Sonic didn't even look at Hanako to smack him, eyes instead scanning the area they're in, is probably more insulting than the actual hit itself- What the hell is a Pyro Jack?!]

[someone else eventually ends up staring at the tanzaku that Nadehiko wrote, a half-eaten beef skewer getting gnawed on. He stands there for a few seconds before commenting around his skewer]

Wow, what did that wish do to you? If you thought it was that offensive, you could've just written a different wish, y'know?

[NIKKI?!]

That wish is fine though. [he pulls the skewer out of his mouth] Maybe you could work on being a little more chipper about it. Something like: "Everything will definitely be alright" or "Everything's coming up Milhouse!."

When you're talking about the kind of trouble we're all getting into on a regular basis, I'd say it counts as optimistic.

[ She says it in good enough cheer that it's clear she's just teasing, though. ]

I'm glad, though. This year's been pretty crazy, so I think we all deserve a chance to have a little fun - the regular kids and us big kids. Don't you agree?

Maki-san!

[and here comes a familiar face with his own umbrella, one that had a cute tanuki pattern printed on it. It stands in stark contrast with the dark blue pinstripe yukata he's wearing]

It's the first time I've been to one without nee-chan... Or, I guess, being on this side of it. [a lopsided smile] I tried to offer to help set up some of the booths but everyone told me to just enjoy the festival instead...

Has it been busy?
saynotobugs: Shrug. (what can you do)

[personal profile] saynotobugs 2024-07-12 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Decently. It's still raining, but at least it's better than last year. Might even clear up enough for the fireworks to go ahead. So there's at least more people than I expected.

[Maki shrugs and cleans up the stray rings that missed their targets.]

[He can certainly try!!!! Granted, with his floating ability, he had a bit of an easier time getting to eye-level with other folks, but in his flustered and frantic state, he may as well be clumsily scaling a tree in his attempts to hide her eyes from all of this. His efforts seem to be in vain, though, when Ghost goes and scruffs him, letting out a small yelp as he's caught in her grasp. Oh great-- bad enough he's got something this embarrassing on display, but to be dangled about like a naughty cat? RIP his dignity, it'll be missed.]

Nothing! There's nothing at all to look at!

[Flailing his arms a little, he goes to grab at her cheeks, hoping to tilt her head up towards the sky and away from... whatever adorably cute thing might be happening right behind him.]

[He realizes what just left his mouth a moment too late, and the sudden hush of the party is almost deafening in his ears, oppressive in all of it's stillness. Or... no, maybe that's the sound of blood rushing to his head instead, as he glimpses at the crowd behind him, and then back at Shinsha, his face as red as the sand in his knife as he gapes in horror. That had come out entirely wrong-- he hadn't wanted them to think he was some innocent, pure-hearted child who only wanted to hold hands with the girl he liked. Heck, he'd already held her hand! Multiple times! On a sort-of-date, even!! It was more... the principle of the thing?? Getting to spend time with her and getting her undivided attention???

... well, okay, he did have spicy thoughts about her too, but it's not like he wanted to tell the whole city about them, for crying out loud! And especially not Shinsha!!!

He's so mortified that he doesn't fight or struggle when Cinnabun's massive cage encircles around him, instead sinking slowly back to the ground, flopping face-first onto whatever clear patch of ground remains in his new mercury enclosure.]

[ Do you know what the problem with sprinting is, Hibiki?

Sure, it's a good way to get away from something - but the problem is the you might run into something. Or someone. Maybe Hibiki was just so overwhelmed that she isn't thinking, but after a little while she manages to bump right into someone in the crowd. Someone relatively small enough to overlook.

And considering Illya is so small, she immediately falls down with a pained yelp when Hibiki runs into her like that at full speed. It takes a moment for her to even realise what happened, since it kind of feels like a freight train ran into her. But no, it's just-- ]

[Oh, Hanako definitely knows a thing or two about self-sabotage-- perhaps it isn't as bad as Ango's and definitely not as bad as it is in canon, but there's a reason why he's dragged his feet so much about opening up to people in the first place. So he'd be able to sympathize, at least to a degree.

... except this involves Ai. And with everything she has on her shoulders, both in the public eye and out of it, the last thing she needs is some grungy raccoon man hanging off of her like goldfish poop. I don't see what's so bad about doing everyone here a favor. Besides, you usually burn these things after the fact anyway, right?
