Ice pack sounds good, thanks. [Sighs] I was told to check if he was still breathing and he chose that exact moment to wake up. I guess he's easily startled.

Welcome to the office, I guess.

[She takes some disinfectant and bandages from the kit anyway, then grabs an ice pack from the freezer and a cloth from one of the drawers, which she wraps the ice pack in before handing it to him.]

You are the new guy, right? Gautier. I saw the HR rolls came in.

[He chuckles darkly. What a welcome. Like fraternity hazing but for adults or something.]

That's me. Call me Sylvain.

[He takes the ice and presses it to his jaw, subtly leaning away as well to avoid the disinfectant and bandages. He's fine!!!!! He will walk it off.]

Midorikawa Maki. I'm technically IT, but I end up doing a lot of general office work. And in this case, patching up stubborn newbies who don't want their cuts cleaned. Is that really worth it?

[Wow, girlfriend is really not giving a guy any room for plausible deniability, huh? She reminds him suddenly and very strongly of Ingrid.]

Sounds like you have a lot on your plate, you don't need to play nurse, too. I can get it myself.

Sure, sure. [She dumps the supplies in front of him with a shrug.] So did you transfer to Yumemigaoka from another department?

Hmm, yes and no. I never really had an official position at the Union in London, but they did give me a reference when I applied here. Figured I'd come right to the source, you know?

To the hub, huh. We get a lot of people here like that, chasing a dream. Guess it's not too surprising. It is in the name.

Was that a pun? [He sounds very amused about it. He hadn't thought her the type!] Seems the most efficient way though, right? Besides, I never got to travel abroad for school, seems like a good reason as any to see more of the world.

Just don't throw everything out for that sense of adventure. Too many people waste their lives that way.

[Maki shakes her head and turns back to the coffee machine.]

But hey, while you're here, what do you think of the city?

You say that like an office job at the DU isn't one of the most normal things ever.

[Sure, it's in Japan, and sure the subject matter is far more whimsical than your average office job, but it's still an office job.]

It's sort of funny how similar all cities everywhere are. It's definitely it's own thing, but there's more about it that's similar to the other large cities I've been to than different.

There's a lot to say about that, but I can say of all the jobs I've had, urban planner hasn't been one. At least our trains aren't chronically late... and they exist. Guy from Florida around here can't get used to not having to drive everywhere.

Nor me, but I can say as a city boy myself that Yume is much better organized than some others, and the trains are a result of that. Very orderly, very efficient. I almost feel bad taking my bike around but you can't break bad habits in a day.

Hey, nothing wrong with biking. Whatever gets you to the office, right? I'm from a small town, we basically walked everywhere anyway.

I don't mean that kind of bike, babe.

Comes to the same thing, just people get really insistent that it doesn't.

[She shrugs and shakes her head, sorting out the file folders.]

[One of them is exercise and energy efficient and good for the environment... and the other is thrillseeking death trap.]

Did you grow up in Yumemigaoka?

Nah, I'm from out in the sticks. Worked hard, left home, only got this to show for it. Why do you ask?

Every job has teamwork in it somewhere. Even if you spend most of your time alone.
