[ Drat. French. She tries again. ]

....I mean, it is good to know.

[ That still makes no sense, Jeannette.... ]

[ Uh. Wait, that wasn't supposed to be a question. Try again, Ai. ]

I mean - it is, but you shouldn't be pushing yourself so hard after coming back from a big trip like that.

[ says the hypocrite. ]

You're at least taking things slow, right?

[ Jeannette smiles. ]

You are always so kind.

[ ... It's like looking in a mirror. A French, extremely religiously devout mirror.

Eventually, Ai just sighs. ]

Why are all you kids so determined to burn right out from the word go?

Au contraire - I have been too long away, and must make up my absence to everyone.

[ Ai considers her for a long, long moment... then she just heaves another sigh and plops her fists on her hips. ]

You'll find yourself a job to do if I don't end up giving you one, won't you?

[ an apparent surrender...? ]

[ You bet she will. ]

Hm...

[ Ai puts on a show of thinking it over and taps her chin. Honestly, she had this idea basically as soon as she realizes Jeanette was going to be operating at 100% no matter what Ai had to say about it, but she's got to at least make this believable. ]

Are you any good at handling phone messages? I've got a few meetings today but with Valentine's coming up, I'm negotiating with sponsors left right and center. Would you be able to kind of babysit my phone line for the afternoon and take any messages I get?

You receive that many calls....?

[ The shock is sincere, and manages to outweigh her suspicions. Don't think she doesn't at least guess what you're up to, giving her an easy task!! Or uh. Supposed-to-be-easy task.

How do Japanese again...? ]

[ With entirely sincere, authentic weariness; ] I sure do.

[ Entrapment into an easy task or not, it's not a lie that her phone's ringing off the hook more days than not. She's the DU's idol on both sides, after all. ]

We had kind of a lull after Christmas but now things are picking back up again. I can usually handle it fine by myself, but if someone can give me a little breathing room it just makes life easier.

[ Perhaps this, thinks Jeannette, is part of being a commander. Certainly it is part of being a public figure - everyone wanting to speak with you. She had not thought of that, nor had her angel mentioned it. And surely - even if she would rather be in the field - freeing up Ai to handle Dreamer Union business instead is being of aid! ]

If it would be as much of a help as you claim, I do it gladly, but....

[ This is embarrassing. She looks down. ]

....are you strict about....spelling?

[ Cheerful and nonchalant in equal measure; ] If I was, I'd be getting in trouble with myself every day!

[ She's gotten... better thanks to a combo of practice and sheer necessity after years of working in the DU and doing so much paperwork, but there's still a whole lot of high school education shaped gaps in her knowledge she hasn't quite found the time to fill yet.

And Japanese is her one and only language - Jeanette speaks at least two. She's already leaps and bounds ahead of Ai. ]

So long as it gets the message across and I can read it, I don't mind how you write stuff.

[ Ai struggles, as well....It is sweet of her to admit this, as it eases Jeannette's worries. She's felt a bit of a fool needing to rely on furigana in her own town, and was not especially upset to be leaving Japanese high school when she went to France. ]

Then if you do not mind kana, I am at your service.

[ Smile. ]

And shall patrol afterwards.

[ Without even missing a beat; ] That works for me! As long as you've got the time to babysit my office a bit [ and sit down and take a little break while she's doing it ] you can do whatever you like afterwards.

[ She fishes her phone out of her pocket just to check the time and after sweeping away what looks to be an anxiety inducing amount of notifications, she flashes Jeanette a smile. ]

It's a little early, but do you mind me setting you up now? Then you'll have a little extra time to get used to the phone and find where everything is.

I am at your service.

[ And she shall, indeed, watch what Ai does, follow her, and oblige in all things with great care. Focus, Jeanne. An important person in the Dreamer Union is entrusting you with a task! Do not...let....how to use the smartphone slide off your brain. Just because you do not see what everyone else finds so exciting about having a little glowing box in their hand all the time does not mean you CANNOT learn how to use the little glowing box.

Make your (decidedly more terminally online) little brother proud!! ]

[ And just as planned, Ai parks Jeanette in her office - you know, just in case anybody drops by with a message! - and entrusts her with the phone in the office as well, just to make sure she doesn't go wandering and looking for work elsewhere. Her nefarious plan is working. ]

There's plenty of snacks and drinks in the minifridge, so help yourself to those if you get hungry! I only have them here to give people who drop by the office anyway, so they'll need eating before the New Year break or they'll go bad...

[ And then, with basically no fanfare, she promptly hands over her work phone. ]

Here you go! Most calls are probably gonna come through the office phone but if it's something really big and important, they'll call me directly. You just have to say I'm not available and ask them to give you the message, okay?

[ Oh. Oh she has the magic box now. Oh dear. ]

Yes. Um.....

[ Oh dear the magic box doesn't seem to have anywhere that says ANSWER THE PHONE HERE on its surface right now. She points at the smartphone, as if they could possibly be discussing anything else - but clarity is vital on the battlefield. ]

When it rings, will it....tell me how to answer it?

[ Still not missing a beat; ]

Yup! It'll come up with a little screen that says someone's calling. There's a green button and a red button, too. If you want to answer it, you just put your finger on the green button and...

[ She taps the phone screen and mimes swiping with her finger. ]

Like that! It'll answer the call and you can just start talking like normal.

[ Green button, red button......That sounds....simple enough. Jeanne mimics the swipe motion in midair. ]

A swift strike. Understood.

Yup! That's all there is to it.

[ sh... should she warn jeanette not to Actually strike the phone? ... it's probably fine. ]

There'll be a little red button that you can use to hang up once you're done talking, too. Anything else you want me to go over?

[ A moment to think, but.....all of Jeannette's worries are more "am I going to be up for this task?" and even a faint "is this truly the best use of my time?" (she is berating herself greatly for that - helping Ai is NEVER not a good idea!), so she shakes her head. ]

I shall take good notes. You will want for nothing!

[ Except maybe a clue what some of the words say! But she'll try! Really hard! ]
