Kaiju Movies (Sometime in June)

[If you're passing by Riverwalk Theater, maybe on your way home from Promised Academy or even the Cat Cafe, you might see a dark-haired boy lingering in front of the numerous Teki-Terra promo posters outside. He's still in his school uniform-- definitely not the PA one, but those with a keen eye can probably tell it's from Fujiwara Junior-- and he's twisting his backpack handles in his hands as he paces, a 90's Teki-Terra keychain hanging from one of it's straps, clearly agonizing over something as he mutters to himself.]

Ugh, why is this screening so late...?? Maybe I can convince Mom and Dad to let me go by myself, and-- no, they're gonna make me take Tsukasa, and there's no way, not after the last time...

[He pauses his pacing to slump dramatically against one of the walls of the theater, as if being closer to these posters might magically help him find a solution to his dilemma.]

But... the original Teki-Terraaaaaas... on the big screeeen... with MERCH...

[THE PAIN IS SO REAL RIGHT NOW]

[This is a whole lot of Not Ei's Problem, but for some reason the despairing muttering makes him pause anyway.]

...What, is it that good?

[Normally, Amane probably would have been embarrassed to have been caught muttering like this, especially by a boy near his age-- no one likes to be seen talking to themselves, after all! But the audacity of this guy's question is enough to unlock The Nerd in him, and he pushes himself up off the wall a bit indignantly.]

Is it that go-- Are you kidding me? This movie's like a triumph of old-school special effects! Do you know how much work they put into it back in the day to make it look as convincing as it did? CGI in this day and age could never!

Whoa-- I get it already. One of those cult classic hits... I'm not much of a movie buff. [Gotta get a different 13 Sentinels kid in here for that.] But I guess I can appreciate good craftmanship.

[Some of his Nerd Rage evaporates a little at the other boy's concession, and he pulls his eyes away self-consciously, mumbling a little as he replies:]

I mean... I'm not much of one either, but you don't have to be in order to see how ahead of it's time this thing was, y'know?

[He glances back over, a bit of disbelief coloring his expression.]

Have you really never seen Teki-Terra before, though? Not even the reboot films? They're like... everywhere.

The reboot...?

[ He thinks about that a while. Really thinks. Somewhere, in the back of his mind... ]

...The one from a couple years ago. That's the one with the motorcycle chase through the city, right?

[Do you see that thousand yard stare? That is the stare of a boy having to reckon with the unearthing of something he had tried SO VERY HARD to bury in his mind over the past few years.]

... technically, yes. But we don't talk about that particular entry in the series.

[Because, seriously, who thought it was a good idea to put a motorcycle chase in a kaiju film?? People were watching it for the giant monsters smashing up cities, not the cool car stunts!!]

[ HE VISIBLY DEFLATES... ]

I thought it was kind of cool.

I-I'm not... saying it wasn't or anything, but-- it felt more suited for one of those superhero films instead of a kaiju one? There's nothing really wrong with liking it on it's own if you haven't watched the others.

[Even if it was a blasphemy to the name of Teki-Terra films, but hey, people had to start from somewhere!! And maybe this guy would see the light after watching the original films, hopefully.]

...I can't say I really get it. But tell me which you recommend, then. I'll just start there.

[HO BOY... you do not know what you just unleashed here, Ei!!]

Well, you gotta start with the Showa trilogy, obviously. [He pats the poster for the screenings for emphasis, before continuing:] Even if they rebooted the series, it's always good to know where it started from, and the story arc across the first three films is more solid, in my opinion.

Then you can move on to the Heisei films, but I think the first two are the stronger ones of the bunch. They kind of just go so-so after that.
